Growing up, I was always closer to my dad than my mom. We saw action movies together, played with monster trucks, watched superhero cartoons and played video games. He didn’t have a son back then so I essentially served that purpose, which I didn’t quite understand because why did he need a boy when I was there? I liked the same things so why did it matter what my gender was?
It doesn’t. Comics are for everyone. You don’t need certain genitals, skin color, chromosome to be able to read words, look at pictures, and understand a story. You don’t need an encyclopedic knowledge to be considered a fan. You love a thing and you are a fan.
I love comics completely and utterly. I love these characters and the trials they go through and how continuously, they fight on (and sometimes they don’t because being a hero sometimes means knowing when to not fight). No matter what they’ve done, they are there for the innocent and for good. These are beautiful stories and people are being made to feel like crap for liking them and that has got to stop. I want to see kids of all genders and races reading these stories and dressing up like them and finding someone they can relate to and NEVER have to feel bad for that.
We are a community. We work together. We can make this happen.
So I am comics. I will be like my heroes and stand up for those that can’t because I learned from the best. Higher. Further. Faster. More.
